When the ground became dry again we pushed it all the way to the town of Anna. We only hit 30 miles that day due to the weather craziness, but it felt like so much more. That night in the motel I began feeling sick, and the following day I was out with some mad illness, hardly able to walk let alone get on a bike. One friend joked that it was the dead fish in the flooded waters that got to me. Whatever it was, it forced us to take a much-needed rest day. We re-calculated the routes and re-energized for the next segment. Vienna, here we come.
On the morning of the 4th day, in Cape Girardeau, we enjoyed breakfast with our cycle crew & then headed to a bike shop together for some tune-ups. We only got 5 miles in before the storm hit. Dad and I took shelter and waited. When it was just a light rain, we headed across the river bridge and into Illinois. Finally out of Missouri! But this is where the roads were flooded. We kept to the center line since the river literally came up on either side. But it got deeper... Pretty soon we were biking through 6-inch flooding, infested with algae, litter and due to the smell, I'm pretty sure dead fish too. At the same time you have to navigate traffic, because there are lines of cars as far as the eye can see who are waiting their turn to trek across this passageway. And there was another storm brewing in the sky. So, with all this madness I thought it was an opportune time to take a video on my phone, holding it in hand, while swim-biking. I do not recommend trying this. Watch the video for yourself, I had a close call.

Wow, you guys. Hang in there...I hope it dries out! Are you sticking with Great Rivers South? I see you went over to Cave In Rock and took the ferry across the Ohio. I'm anxious for you to get on the Trace! Dan
